sopARTIST: Jelili Atiku

Jelili Atiku uses performance and other art forms to create dialogue around violence, poverty and disconnection. In the short documentary Lagos in the Red, filmmakers Lotte Løvholm, Nanna Nielsen & Karen Andersen capture a performance in Lagos.

"I am making a statement about the human tendency toward violence and crisis... I have felt the pain of crisis alot. That gave me the obligation to think about why we are violent"

Atiku, born in Nigeria, uses performative African traditions and contemporary experience to engage the audience, incorporating the public and testing boundaries. He aims to respond to corruption and colonialism, using his body's energy as a powerful and performative tool to help viewers understand the world and expand their participation. His ongoing performance series In the Red uses the color as a symbol of life and suffering; learn more about the performance and the artist by watching the short documentary.
